The Butadiene Price Trend changed sharply during Q2 2026, with prices moving higher across almost every major market covered in the quarter. The main reason was a sudden increase in crude oil and naphtha-related feedstock costs following the USA-Israel vs Iran conflict and the growing threat around the Strait of Hormuz.
These developments created concerns about energy and raw material supply, which quickly affected the cost of producing and moving butadiene. For buyers and sellers, Q2 was a good example of how quickly the butadiene market can react when energy markets become unstable.
Prices climbed strongly through much of the quarter and reached very high levels in several regions. However, the story changed in June. Buying activity slowed, supply concerns eased to some extent, and Butadiene Prices started to fall across most monitored markets.

What Happened to Butadiene Prices in Q2 2026?
The second quarter of 2026 was marked by a strong upward movement in Butadiene Prices. Europe experienced some of the largest increases, while the USA also recorded a major rise. Asian markets increased as well, although the movement was generally more moderate than in Europe.
The important point is that butadiene does not move in isolation. Its production is closely connected with steam crackers and the cost of feedstocks such as naphtha. When crude oil becomes more expensive and concerns grow around the availability of crude and related feedstocks, production costs can rise quickly.
That is what happened during Q2 2026.
The conflict-related supply concerns pushed crude oil and naphtha costs higher. This put pressure on producers and increased export and domestic market valuations. As the quarter progressed, buyers faced higher procurement costs, while sellers operated in an environment of tighter supply and elevated production expenses.
Europe recorded particularly strong increases. Belgium, Germany, and France all saw quarterly increases of more than 67%. The USA also recorded a rise of more than 51%. In Asia, increases generally ranged from around 21% to 42%.
Europe Saw Some of the Sharpest Price Movement
European markets were among the most affected during Q2 2026.
Belgium recorded an increase of approximately 68.42%, making it the largest quarterly increase among the monitored markets. Germany followed with a rise of around 68.06%, while France increased by approximately 67.52%.
These large movements reflected the combined pressure of high energy costs and rising naphtha feedstock expenses. The threat of disruption around the Strait of Hormuz added another layer of uncertainty to the market.
In Belgium, domestic prices at FD Antwerp moved to very high levels as steam cracker operations faced increasing cost pressure. Germany experienced a similar situation at FD Hamburg, where buyers had to deal with significantly higher procurement costs.
France also followed the same broad pattern. Prices at FD Le Havre increased strongly through the quarter as higher feedstock and energy costs worked their way through the market.
However, June brought some relief. Prices declined by about 6.90% in Belgium, 6.83% in Germany, and 6.81% in France as procurement activity began to slow.
This June correction is important because it shows that a strong quarterly increase does not necessarily mean prices will continue rising at the same speed.
South Korea and India Also Recorded Strong Gains
South Korea recorded a Q2 increase of approximately 39.69% in FOB Busan export prices. The market was affected by the same broad energy and feedstock pressures seen elsewhere.
As crude oil and naphtha costs increased, export valuations moved higher. Demand from regional buyers also helped keep prices elevated during the quarter.
By June, however, buying activity moderated considerably. South Korean prices fell by around 16.91%, showing how quickly the market could correct after reaching its quarterly peak.
India recorded an even stronger quarterly increase of around 41.84%. FOB Calcutta prices climbed steadily during Q2 as higher crude oil and naphtha-linked feedstock costs increased the overall cost structure.
Demand from synthetic rubber and polymer buyers helped support the market at elevated levels. But in June, procurement became more cautious and prices declined by around 6.16%.
The Indian market therefore followed the wider Q2 pattern: a strong rise followed by a noticeable correction.
Japan and Malaysia Reflected Higher Import Costs
Importing countries also felt the impact of rising prices in exporting markets.
In Japan, CIF Yokohama prices for butadiene imported from South Korea increased by around 38.99% during Q2 2026. Since South Korean FOB prices rose strongly, the higher costs were passed into Japanese import valuations.
Demand from synthetic rubber and polymer buyers kept prices elevated through much of the quarter. But when South Korean prices corrected in June, the effect was also seen in Japan. Japanese import prices declined by approximately 16.20% during the month.
Malaysia experienced a similar situation. CIF Penang prices for material imported from India increased by around 35.23% during Q2. Higher Indian export prices were passed through into Malaysian import valuations.
Demand from synthetic rubber and chemical buyers helped maintain elevated prices. In June, Malaysian prices declined by approximately 5.88% as the correction in the Indian market moved through to import values.
These examples show an important feature of international commodity markets: a price change in one major exporting market can quickly affect buyers in another country.
China Showed a Different Pattern
China presented an interesting contrast because its import and domestic markets behaved differently.
CIF Shanghai import prices increased by approximately 39.45% during Q2 2026. This was largely connected with the increase in South Korean FOB prices and the higher feedstock costs behind those prices.
However, Ex-Shanghai domestic prices increased by a more contained 21.36%.
One reason for this difference was steady local cracker capacity, which helped keep the domestic market movement more moderate compared with imported material.
Even so, both segments reached elevated levels during the quarter. In June, both experienced a sharp correction. CIF Shanghai prices declined by around 16.34%, while Ex-Shanghai domestic prices fell by approximately 15.58%.
The Chinese market therefore demonstrates why it is useful to look at both import and domestic prices instead of assuming that one price represents the entire market.
The USA Recorded One of the Largest Increases
The USA recorded a Q2 increase of approximately 51.85%, placing it among the markets with the strongest quarterly growth.
CIF Houston import prices were affected by higher Dutch export prices, while domestic naphtha-related feedstock costs also added pressure. Tight supply conditions helped keep valuations at high levels during the quarter.
The market then experienced a significant correction in June. Prices fell by around 17.04% as buyers reduced procurement considerably.
This sharp monthly decline highlights the difference between a quarterly trend and short-term market direction. Looking only at the Q2 increase could make the market appear continuously bullish, but the June movement tells a more complete story.
What Does the Butadiene Price Chart Show?
The Butadiene Price Chart for Q2 2026 would show two very different phases.
The first phase was the strong upward movement during the quarter. Prices increased as crude oil and naphtha costs rose and supply concerns intensified. Europe showed some of the most dramatic increases, while the USA and several Asian markets also moved higher.
The second phase came in June, when prices corrected sharply across most markets.
This peak-and-correction pattern is one of the most important features of Q2 2026. It shows that commodity prices can react quickly to changes in supply concerns, feedstock costs, and buyer behavior.
For anyone tracking the market, a chart is particularly useful because it makes the timing of the increase and correction easier to understand.
Butadiene Price Index and Market Direction
The Butadiene Price Index during Q2 2026 was strongly influenced by crude oil and naphtha feedstock costs.
When these costs moved higher, the butadiene market followed. The relationship was particularly visible during the period of heightened supply concerns caused by geopolitical tensions and the Strait of Hormuz closure threat.
The easing seen in June was equally important. As procurement activity moderated, the pressure on prices began to reduce.
Therefore, the index movement during this period should not be viewed simply as a measure of demand. It also reflected changes in production costs, supply expectations, international trade flows, and purchasing behavior.
Butadiene Price Forecast: What Should Buyers Watch?
Looking beyond Q2, the future direction of the market will depend heavily on feedstock and energy conditions.
Crude oil prices will remain an important factor because changes in crude can affect naphtha costs and, in turn, the economics of butadiene production. Geopolitical developments and shipping conditions will also remain important because disruptions can quickly change supply expectations.
Buyer behavior will be another key factor. The June correction across most markets showed that high prices can eventually cause buyers to become more cautious. If procurement remains limited, prices may face additional pressure. On the other hand, renewed supply concerns or stronger demand could provide support.
A practical way to follow the market is therefore to watch several indicators together: crude oil movement, naphtha costs, cracker operating conditions, regional demand, import prices, and changes in procurement activity.
