Leaders create a vision in their mind which day they share with others of the future that we are together working towards.
When the leader creates that vision, and can articulate clearly what that vision will be, the benefits that all will it receive, and the satisfaction that everyone will have knowing that they have created this, then we have a “shared vision “.
Inspire a shared vision as the second practice of the five practices of extemporary leadership in the leadership challenge. Without a vision do we know where we’re going?
Without a vision, how can I trust you as a leader will take me forward better place than we are in now.
Managers are concerned about meeting this week deadlines, of achieving the short term and quantifiable objectives on budget and on time.
Leaders encapsulate this as well, when they inspire by defining, by talking about, by exciting others of the vision they have that involves everybody.
Leaders also understand the purpose that their vision achieves. When the followers understand the purpose of what they are doing every day, and it’s ultimate outcome of achieving the desired vision, they become even more motivated to work towards the shared vision.
Visions are not just words that are written down and stored in the bottom drawer .
Visions should be talked about.
They are not just words that are on the website.
Everybody for whom that vision applies should feel ownership, as they know ‘this is where we are going’.
People in the team should be excited by what they see as an achievable and exciting future because of the work that they are doing, because their leader is guiding them towards that vision.
Nelson Mandela created a vision which the people of South Africa believed in and then saw that become a reality.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum created a vision for the future of Dubai and the people of Dubai are now seeing that become reality.

Leaders should create an exciting, realistic and achievable vision of the future so that those following will be inspired, will want to struggle for that shared vision, to ‘climb the mountain’ following their leader, knowing that the outcome, the achievement of the vision will be for ‘shared’ benefits and is aligned with the ‘purpose’ of their work.
Leaders create the vision of ‘where we are going’ - and the followers are inspired to achieve that.
