About

Considering that the fifteen year long manga of Naruto came to an end in November of last year, Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 really feels like it is marking the end of an era as well and doing so with great visual style. The manga was also one of the biggest Shonen Jump series of the past few decades and it’s strange to think that it is now finally over. While I am sad to see the Ultimate Ninja Runescape games also finish, I am sure Bandai Namco won’t leave Naruto alone for long. It will also be interesting to see what developer they’ll pick for the next big Naruto game. Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC this Fall. NPD has released their end of year figures for the financial state of the Runescape video game industry, and the news isn’t great. Retail sales of hardware, software and accessories are down 22% over last year, which equates to $3.73B less being spent on video Runescape games in 2012. Call of Duty and annual sports titles take up half the list by themselves. Halo 4 looks particularly impressive as it’s the only exclusive game on the list, showing the power of Microsoft’s franchise after all these years. And Lego Batman? People love Lego Runescape games, what can I say? Even though these numbers look grim, we have to keep in mind a number of factors that could help explain the decline. First and foremost, these are only retailsales as NPD doesn’t have access to digital download data. Obviously most console titles are not yet being downloaded, but it does cut out practically the entire PC market which rarely buys box copies of Runescape games. Furthermore, 2012 was officially the last year before the new console wars began. The WiiU has only been out a few months, and data from yesterday shows that it’s sold 890,000 units after 41 days on the market. It’s particularly impressive when you remember that the Xbox 360 and PS3 sold 600,000 and 700,000 units respectively over that time period. If the WiiU continues to sell well, and we really do have new systems from Sony and Microsoft by the end of next year, you will see a dramatic rise in sales of hardware and software alike. It’s actually quite logical that sales would keep declining as the current generation of consoles winds down, as most Runescape players who want one of the current-gen systems have alreadybought them. In short, this doesn’t spell doom and gloom for the industry as digital sales and new consoles will breathe new life into the medium. There is increased competition from smartphones and tablets, but it’s hardly enough to cause serious concern. Gaming as a past time is still increasing in popularity, not declining, and as Runescape gamers grow up and keepgaming, that’s going to be true for some time to come.
