Arnold Palmer
A transformative moment often requires a specific combination of conditions and a single event that acts as a catalyst. Think of Europe in 1914, a mix of ethnic tensions, political rivalries and expansionist conflict. Then, bam, the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand leads to a world war.
In the America of 1958, the war hero president, Dwight Eisenhower, loved golf Gold Patent leather Au Palace 120mm and conducted business on the course. Economic expansion led to an emerging middle class, suburban migration and an increase in leisure time. Into that mix of conditions came a bolt of lightning that made golf the coolest sport on the planet: Arnold Palmer won the 1958 Masters, and the game was changed forever.
Of course, it wasn't only Palmer's one shot (four under 284) victory that did the trick, but also the way the tournament unfolded and the winner's personality.
It was the first year that soldiers from nearby Camp Gordon were offered free admission and were recruited to run the scoreboards at Augusta National. Coast Guard veteran, played his way into a tie for first with Sam Snead. Palmer won over the troops and most of the rest of the crowd. By the time he teed off with Ken Venturi on Sunday morning, Arnie's Army was officially born, and its enthusiasm helped carry Palmer to victory.
That's not to say it was all smooth sailing for Palmer. When he reached the 12th hole, the 155 yard par 3 that makes up the middle leg of what Herbert Warren Wind named Amen Corner in the days after the '58 Masters, Palmer was one shot ahead Venturi for the overall lead. There had been a lot of rain in the previous days, and Palmer's shot carried the green and plugged in the rough. Citing a local rule, Palmer argued that he was entitled to a free drop. Venturi and the rules official assigned to their pairing disagreed, saying Palmer had to play it as it lay.
Furious, Palmer insisted that he would play the first ball as instructed and then play a second ball from a drop and let the rules committee sort it out later. He made a five with the first ball and a three with the second. When the two men teed off on the par 5 13th, they knew someone had a one shot lead, but they didn't know who.
On 13, Palmer hit two beautiful shots and holed an 18 footer for eagle, while Venturi made birdie. After finishing the hole, the players received unofficial word that Palmer would win the argument Pink Patent Leather Fifi Sling 80mm and be granted a three on the 12th. Bobby Jones himself gave them the official ruling on the 15th hole. Clearly flustered, Venturi bogeyed 14, 15 and 16. Palmer had two bogeys coming in as well, but they didn't matter. At that point Venturi was too far back, and the only other players with a chance to catch Palmer were faltering down the stretch.
It's appropriate that Palmer's breakthrough victory came from such a brazen act of will. It was a prime example of his hard driving, confident personality. He would take any risk, try any shot, and never lose faith Black Patent leather Au Palace 120mm in his own beliefs and abilities. That was what led him to challenge the rules official and to hit the shots that others couldn't or wouldn't. MultiColor Leather Armadillo Bride 120mm This self confidence and bold nature drove him to success on and off the course and drew others to him.
In 1958, that magnetism was on display for a national TV audience, as the Masters was televised for just the third time in its history. Viewers were invited into the pristine grounds of Augusta National for the final three holes, and what they found there was a thin waisted, wide shouldered star with a go for broke style. He broke down all the pre conceived notions of what a golfer could be, and he made the sport into an athletic adventure played over a stunning natural landscape.
People were sold on him and the game. Frank Chirkinian, who produced the Masters for CBS for nearly 40 years, has said that he knew golf would succeed as a televised sport the moment Palmer appeared on screen, coming over a rise, silhouetted by the light, with his hair Brylcreemed into a pompadour and his thick forearms hitching his pants like some long forgotten cowboy.
Succeed it did. Palmer would go on to win another three Masters and seven majors altogether, along the way setting a new standard for golfers and all athletes as a crossover media star who drew thousands of new fans and recreational players to the game. It hasn't been the same since.

"This is the corniest, cheesiest thing, I know, but the whole reason I fell in love with doing this is, for two hours you get to make everybody forget about all their problems," he says.
King, the stage manager, is just one part of a small, behind the scenes army at the popular Route 30 East music and entertainment venue, which is presenting its popular Christmas show to many thousands of spectators through Dec. 31.
The show will be performed no less than 89 times to an expected 115,000 plus people over its two month run.
The scene onstage is a winter wonderland, a two hour extravaganza of music, dance, comedy and scenery but there would be no Christmas, and no show, without those in the background.
There are 16 crew members to go along with the 16 performers onstage.
And if those onstage are the ducks out on the water, floating actually, singing or dancing serenely under the bright spotlights, those backstage are the feet, paddling quickly underwater.
King, who knows better than just about anyone, says "it's a whole other world" behind the stage.
And the very best thing is "watching the audience when that 'rag' (the main curtain) pops open. Everybody has that sparkle in their eye, and everybody backstage has the same thing."
It's also a world unseen to the general audience way up at the top of the spacious theater, where company show manager Matthew Gotwalt is "the voice from above, on a headset," as King jokingly calls him.
From his vantage point up near the ceiling, he's the one who oversees the entire production, and is in constant contact with the lighting, sound and props people.
Backstage, King is doing everything from lowering scenery to delivering beds to the stage during intermission for an upcoming skit to otherwise logging many miles in the course of a show.
"Good shoes are key," he says.
Nearby, performer Wess Cooke is behind a curtain, dressed in a tux and waiting to go on.
"People just have no clue that there's a cast equally as big back here, making us look good out there," says Cooke, a familiar face and voice at AMT shows over the years.
While Cooke is on stage performing a perfect five part gospel music harmony on the song "Children Go Where I Send Thee," King is waiting by the ropes again to drop some Hawaiian Christmas trees onto the stage for "Mele Kalikimaka."
King is from Seattle and once worked shows for "everybody from bar bands to the Rolling Stones." But has he ever worked the perfect performance?
"Never. My motto's always been, 'If I ever have a stress free, perfect show, I should probably retire, because it will never happen again.' "
From another control booth Wholesale Snapbacks Hats downstairs in the back of the auditorium, Don Evanisko, master electrician, controls the stage lights and spotlights, while audio engineer Matthew Dean oversees, or overhears, the sound and microphones.
As the show proceeds, singers and dancers whiz past Portal 2, a spot to the side backstage where you can see most of the stage, just not the crowd. They need to get off the stage and back on quicker than anyone realizes.
Says King, "Think about how long it takes you to get dressed in the morning, and then realize that they sometimes have 30 seconds to be ready" for their next song.
Thanks in big part to the work backstage, things are running smoothly out on the stage.
Singer Johnny Fortuno, a good looking Elvis like performer, plays to a dozen or so Red Hat Ladies in the first two rows at the theater.
Michelle Mishler plays chi hair straightener Shelly, an adorable, mouthy little girl who wants everything for Christmas. And Angela Walker's voice is perfect as she sings, "How great our joy . Joy, Joy Joy!"
Upstairs, Gotwalt says some people in his job would rather oversee everything from backstage, but he likes his perch near the top.
Australian growth at 'solid' 0
Sydney: Australian growth slowed to 0.5 percent in the March quarter despite the withdrawal of large scale stimulus spending, official figures showed on Wednesday, raising hopes the recovery is self sustaining.
Treasurer Wayne Swan called the data, including 2.7 percent expansion in the 12 months to March, a "solid outcome" that reflected Australia's performance as the only advanced economy to defy recession during the global downturn.
"Australians should have great confidence in the fact that we have another very solid outcome for an economy which continues to be one of the best in the developed world," he told reporters.
"This is more evidence that we got in and we did what was necessary during the global recession and we now are seeing the fruits of that again."
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was up 0.5 percent quarter on quarter, underpinned by an 11.6 percent jump in public investment and 0.6 percent growth in household spending.
The economy expanded 2.7 percent over the 12 months to March 2010, while growth for the White Leather Beverly 100mm December quarter was revised up from 0.9 percent to 1.1 percent.
Government spending on buildings and infrastructure part of a 50 billion US dollar stimulus was the main growth driver, adding 0.7 percentage points over the quarter.
But growth slowed overall, dropping from 1.1 percent in the December quarter and 0.6 percent in the same period last year, following the unwinding of stimulus and a series of rate hikes.
"We've had a far shallower downturn than major advanced economies and we're recovering from a position of strength," said Swan.
"Unlike many other economies we are not wading through the rubble of capital destruction, small business closures and prolonged and high unemployment as we set about building for the future."
Swan said the withdrawal of stimulus subtracted about 0.10 percentage points from quarterly growth, but the data showed "tentative signs that a self Leather Bloody Mary 120mm sustaining private sector recovery is in prospect".
He also pointed to a 4.2 percent rise in resource rich Australia's terms of trade in the quarter.
"With demand for commodities accelerating and export prices expected to continue to rise, the prospects for exports are very positive," Swan said.
Analysts said the growth slowdown was not as sharp as feared, and noted that the underlying fundamentals looked strong.
"On an annual basis, it still looks pretty good," said Black Suede Big Dorcet 120mm AMP economist Shane Oliver.
"My feeling is we'll see consumer spending pick up in the second quarter, dwelling activity will pick up and so will business investment, and that should push GDP back up to 0.8 percent to 0.9 percent growth."
UBS economist Scott Haslem said rising terms of trade and domestic incomes meant the "most reasonable central case seems to be further strengthening in growth through the year as the private sector gathers much greater momentum."
Australia's central bank this week held interest rates at 4.50 percent, pausing an aggressive series of hikes since it became the first advanced economy to shift away from stimulatory settings in October.
Instead of contracting 0.5 percent as forecast in last year's budget, Australia's economy grew 2.0 percent in 2009 10 and Swan flagged a powerful rebound in growth to 3.25 percent in 2010 11 in last month's annual budget.
Swan then said GDP would hit 4.0 percent Silver Leather Beverly 100mm in 2011 12, as Australia "defied global economic gravity" to outperform the world's major economies.
He said Australia's resilience, thanks to Asian resource exports and the stimulus spending, meant it would be debt free by 2012 13 three years earlier than expected.
