How Long Does it Take to Rewire a House

Have you been having minor electrical faults, like safety switches tripping without apparent cause? Maybe your house is more than a few decades old? It might be time to rewire your home. You wouldn’t be alone if you said that having to rewire a house fills you with dread. If you found out that your existing wiring poses a risk of fire or electrocution, you might feel differently about it. While each home is different, this will give you a rough guide as to how long it may take for a complete rewire.

• How do I know if my home needs to be rewired?

As we’ve just learnt, there are some telltale signs that you’ll need to rewire a house. If you notice flickering or buzzing lights, or your globes not lasting very long, contact a licensed electrician. The same goes for if your power outlets are warm or vibrating, or even worse, have discolouration and scorch marks, or even smoke coming from them. Burning and odd odours from outlets and electrical panels should not be taken lightly, nor should frayed or chewed wires. Though flickering light globes seem like a minor inconvenience, the risk to your family and friends is simply too great to ignore.

• What will it entail?

This is a big job, and a lot of changes throughout your home will need to be made. Fortunately, when its over, you won’t notice any of them – it will be the same home sweet home to you, but without the risk of electrocution. Generally, switchboards, safety switches and power points will need to be installed or replaced. Phone and data outlets will need to be installed, updated or replaced, as will lighting and light switches. Most importantly, general wiring throughout the house will need to be replaced or installed. Definitely only trust a licensed electrician to rewire a house.

• How long will it take to rewire a house?

The biggest question – and the hardest to answer. As our houses are as unique as we are, without getting in an electrician to give you an accurate quote, we can only give you an estimate. Generally, allow between one to three weeks for three bedroom home. This is dependent on a number of factors, including the size of the team, the number of points that need to be replaced, and the difficulty in reaching wires. Your electrician will need to move furniture around, potentially remove plaster and get into wall and ceiling cavities. We recommend finding another place to stay while your home is being rewired – your electrician will have to turn of the power for the majority of the rewiring.

It’s no fun having to have your home rewired, and it takes a long time. For an accurate estimate for the cost and duration to rewire a house, contact a licensed electrician. You don’t want to cut corners when it comes to your family’s safety.
